Michigan and Kalamazoo Land Conservation Issues
In April 2003, I wrote a Viewpoint dealing with Asylum Lake and submitted it to the Kalamazoo Gazette. They didn't publish it or, at least, haven't published it yet. Other people have told me similar stories of letters or Viewpoints never published or long delayed. It's the Gazette's privilege not to publish letters or Viewpoints that it doesn't like. As A. J. Liebling wrote, "Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one." The Gazette owns the press.
But perhaps the existence of the World Wide Web has recently extended the constitutional guarantee. At least, it seemed to me that a page on my new (as of mid-August 2003) website would be a good place to put thoughts about local land conservation issues. I don't plan to post items on any set schedule, just as things come up. If you know of other people who might be interested in topics such as this, please spread the word.
The April 2003 Viewpoint that the Gazette didn't publish is Letter to the Conservation Editor 1. Others will follow.
